General Statement of Duties: Assist with pesticide container recycling and waste pesticide collections.

Job Description: Position will assist Division of Agriculture Services with conducting the pesticide container recycling and waste Pesticide collection program.  Persons selected will assist recycling program personnel in collecting, grinding, and/or dismantling for disposal all sizes of pesticide containers.  They will also help collect, categorize, and load for disposal waste pesticides.

Position will include the following duties:
  • Loading and unloading containers using equipment such as a bobcat and forklift
  • Grinding of pesticide containers in preparation for recycling
  • Use of power tools to cut up or dismantle large containers to prepare for disposal
  • Pulling trailers to recycling events
  • Directing program participants in proper preparation of containers for disposal

Qualifications: Must be able follow oral and written directives. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to travel.  Must be able to work with and around hazardous materials.  Persons selected must possess good oral and written communication skills.  Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Frequent travel with some overnight stays required.

Supervisor: Program Administrator

Time of Employment: May 1 to August 30, 2016, 40 hours per week. Activities may be conducted outside of these dates based on the successful applicant’s schedule and the needs of the Department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  The duties of this position will be assisting Crew Bosses and Squad Bosses in wildland fire management activities - suppressing wildland fires in the Black Hills area, presuppression activities (equipment maintenance, fuel reduction projects, fire prevention), participate in fire training and prescribed burning projects, and facilities maintenance as part of a 20 person hand crew.

Requirements:  Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, maintain equipment, operate 4x4 vehicles with automatic or manual transmissions. Use chainsaws to clear brush and fell trees. Must be physically able to lift 75 pounds and able to pass the current arduous physical fitness standard (Pack Test) for wildland firefighters.  Night and weekend work required as well as being available for occasional out-of-state fire assignments for up to 14 days. Preference will be given to applicants possessing NWCG wildland fire certifications (S-130, S-190, L-180, etc).

Applicants must be age 18 by date of hire. A valid driver’s license is required. Housing is the responsibility of the employee, unless otherwise noted. Transportation to and from work and associated costs is the responsibility of the employee. Positions require employees to work holidays, weekends, and irregular or rotating shifts. These positions are considered Public Safety Sensitive Positions and are subject to a pre-hire drug screening before hire. Some positions require specific licenses or certification as listed below.

The normal summer season is mid-May through Labor Day. Some employees may work earlier or later. Seasonal employees are paid only for hours worked.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  The duties of this position will be assisting the Agency Aviation Operations Officer and Single Engine Air Tanker (SEAT) Base Managers in maintaining SEAT Bases in Pierre, Lemmon, Buffalo and Hot Springs during the 2016 summer fire season.

Requirements:  Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, maintain equipment, operate 4x4 vehicles with automatic or manual transmissions. Must be physically able to lift 50 pounds. Must have the ability to be able to communicate clearly and effectively over the phone and on a two-way radio console. Will be required to answer phones, take messages, pass on messages, and follow instructions and protocol as required by the SEAT Manager. Need to possess a working knowledge of computer software such as the MS Windows Operating System and MS Office Suite of Word, Excel and Outlook.  Night and weekend work required as well as being available for occasional out-of-state fire assignments for up to 14 days. Any experience in the general aviation field is preferred for these positions.

Need to possess a working knowledge of computer software such as the MS Windows Operating System and MS Office Suite of Word, Excel and Outlook.

Requirements:  To be able to work at a computer workstation for long periods of time under a high stress environment.  Night and weekend work required as well as being available for on-call status on the weekends, holidays, and evening hours.
