Seasonal Firefighter - Dispatcher

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Need to possess a working knowledge of computer software such as the MS Windows Operating System and MS Office Suite of Word, Excel and Outlook. The duties of this position will be working under the supervision of a dispatch supervisor on the initial attack floor at the Great Plains Dispatch Center, 8123 Mt Rushmore Rd, Rapid City, SD 57702. Must have the ability to be able to communicate clearly and effectively over the phone and on a two-way radio console. Will be required to answer phones, take messages, pass on messages, and follow instructions and protocol as required by the Supervisory Dispatcher.

Requirements: To be able to work at a computer workstation for long periods of time under a high stress environment. Night and weekend work required as well as being available for on-call status on the weekends, holidays, and evening hours.

Applicants must be age 18 by date of hire. A valid driver’s license is required. Housing is the responsibility of the employee, unless otherwise noted. Transportation to and from work and associated costs is the responsibility of the employee. Positions require employees to work holidays, weekends, and irregular or rotating shifts. The normal summer season is mid-May through Labor Day. Some employees may work earlier or later. Seasonal employees are paid only for hours worked.

Title: Seasonal, Recycling & Waste pesticide program (2 positions)

Position Description:

Position will assist Division of Agriculture Services with conducting it’s Pesticide container recycling and Waste Pesticide collections program. Persons selected will assist recycling program personnel in collecting, grinding, and/or dismantling for disposal all sizes of pesticide containers.  They will also help personnel collect, categorize, and load for disposal waste pesticides. Persons selected must possess good oral and written communication skills. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Frequent travel with some overnight stays required.

Example of Duties:

  • Position will include the following duties;
  • Loading and unloading containers using equipment such as a bobcat and forklift;
  • Grinding of pesticide containers in the preparation for recycling;
  • Use of power tools to cut up or dismantle large containers to prepare for disposal;
  • Pulling trailers to recycling events;
  • Directing program participants in proper preparations of containers for disposal.

Qualifications; Must be able follow oral and written directives. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to travel. Must be able to work with and around hazardous materials.


Time of Employment; May 1 to August 30, 2018 40 hours per week. Activities may be conducted outside of these dates based on successful applicants schedule and the needs of the Department.

Seasonal Firefighter- Engine Crew

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The duties of this position will be assisting Division Chiefs/Battalion Chiefs in wildland fire management activities. Suppressing wildland fire in the Black Hills area, presuppression activities (Equipment maintenance, fuel reduction projects, fire prevention), participate in fire training and prescribed burning projects and facilities maintenance for the 2018 fire season.

Requirements: Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, maintain equipment, operate 4x4 vehicles with automatic or manual transmissions. Use chainsaws to clear brush and fell trees. Must be physically able to lift 75 pounds and able to pass the current arduous physical standard (Pack Test) for wildland firefighters. Night and weekend work required as well as being available for occasional out-of-state fire assignments for up to 21 days.

Transportation to and from work and associated costs is the responsibility of the employee. Positions require employees to work holidays, weekends, and irregular or rotating shifts. Requirements:  Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, maintain equipment, operate 4x4 vehicles with automatic or manual transmissions. Use chainsaws to clear brush and fell trees. Must be physically able to lift 75 pounds and able to pass the current arduous physical fitness standard (Pack Test) for wildland firefighters.  Night and weekend work required as well as being available for occasional out-of-state fire assignments for up to 14 days. Preference will be given to applicants possessing NWCG wildland fire certifications (S-130, S-190, L-180, etc).
