Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Applicant needs to possess a working knowledge of computer software such as the MS Windows Operating System and MS Office Suite of Word, Excel and Outlook. The duties of this position are carried out under the supervision of a dispatch supervisor on the initial attack floor at the Great Plains Interagency Dispatch Center, 8123 Mt Rushmore Rd, Rapid City, SD 57702. Great Plains Interagency Dispatch Center (GPC), is part of the National Response Framework and the national interagency dispatch system where GPC is a third tier all hazard dispatch center. Applicant must be able to communicate clearly and effectively over the phone and on a two-way radio console. He or she will be required to answer phones, take messages, pass on messages, and follow instructions and protocol as required by the Supervisory Dispatcher.
Applicant must be able to work at a computer workstation for long periods of time under a high stress environment. Applicants are required to work nights, weekends, and holidays when circumstances warrant it. They need to be available for on-call status on weekends, holidays, and evening hours.
Applicants must be 18 years old by date of hire and possess a valid driver’s license. Housing is the responsibility of the employee. Transportation to and from work and associated costs is the responsibility of the employee. Positions require employees to work holidays, weekends, and irregular or rotating shifts. The normal summer season is mid-May through Labor Day. Some employees may work earlier or later. Seasonal employees are paid only for hours worked.
