The Department of Corrections is committed to protecting the citizens of South Dakota by providing safe and secure facilities for offenders committed to our custody by the courts and effective community supervision to adult and juvenile offenders upon their release. By working professionally and collaboratively with other stakeholders to maximize opportunities for rehabilitation and hold offenders accountable, Department of Corrections staff work diligently to model and teach offenders skills, provide services and transitional resources and oversight, and change offender behavior. Working as a Conservation Officer or Park Ranger for the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks is not just a job. It is a life passion. It is about working together as a team with colleagues, customers, landowners, and partner organizations to ensure that our state’s outdoor heritage lives on for the next generation. Our skilled workforce believes in a culture of professionalism and accountability to meet the expectations of our customers while empowering one another to succeed. Both conservation officers and park rangers are certified law enforcement in South Dakota. They provide safety and protection to the people of South Dakota while enforcing the laws put in place to conserve our state’s outdoor resources. South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Officers manage wildlife, fisheries, water, and land resources; enforce wildlife, criminal, and water laws; implement department programs in assigned districts; and enforce criminal laws and park rules and regulations. Furthermore, both positions work to implement statewide public relations efforts while providing recreational opportunities and public safety. Park Rangers and Conservations Officers often work together and interchange services to accomplish their goals. These men and women are our friends, neighbors, and family and they work very hard to enhance the quality of life we all know and love in this state.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol serves with distinction, protecting the citizens and visitors on the state’s roads and highways. The Highway Patrol has had a long and distinctive history that started with eight men under Superintendent Walter Goetz in 1938. The men and women who wear the uniform today continue to be committed to public service. The Highway Patrol has a credible reputation because of the professionalism displayed by its members and the ability of the agency to be progressive and adapt with the changing law enforcement needs. Highway Patrol State Troopers assist motorists who need help, supports emergency officials, aids in emergency situations, responds to disasters and promotes highway safety through education, enforcement and example. Highway Patrol State Troopers also work with law enforcement agencies across the state to serve residents and travelers. The South Dakota Highway Patrol will be offering a $5,000 hiring incentive to current certified law enforcement officers from in and out of state.
